United for Recovery was formed by people in recovery from alcohol and other drug addictions who have turned their lives around, their family members, friends and allies.  Its mission is to broaden public awareness and understanding of addiction and recovery and increase opportunities for people to get the help they need.

United for Recovery will provide a voice to people in recovery, their families and friends, through advocacy, education and motivation to promote change of attitudes and policies toward addiction treatment and recovery.

Educating Policy Makers

Our members educate policy makers and community leaders about addiction treatment and recovery.  There are millions of people world-wide who are no longer using alcohol or other drugs and are leading healthy and productive lives.  Our recovery education focuses on the success of those individuals, treatment, and the services that people need to sustain their recovery and quality of life.

The Road To Recovery

Approximately 63 percent of Americans say that addiction to alcohol or other drugs has had an impact on them at some point in their lives, according to a 2004 Peter D. Hart and Associates survey for Faces and Voices of Recovery.  We know that treatment for the disease of addiction is as effective as treatment for other chronic conditions.

Unfortunately, in 2003, 20.3 million people still had not received the help they needed.  In California, we have the largest total number of persons of all states- 2 million people 12 and older who needed but did not receive treatment for an alcohol or other drug addiction.  Over 11 percent of the total number of people needing help nationally live in our state.

Fighting Stigma

United for Recovery conducts anti-stigma campaigns aimed to help people understand that addiction is a health problem, not a moral failing.

United For Recovery Supports:

National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month

September is set aside to highlight the strides made in substance abuse treatment and to educate the public that addiction is a chronic, but treatable, public health problem that affects us all.

Alcohol Awareness Month

To recognize the serious problem of alcohol abuse, April is designated ‘Alcohol Awareness Month.’

Alcohol Screening Day

In April, at locations across the United States, people can be screened—anonymously– to see if their drinking habits may be risky.

Red Ribbon Week

In October we celebrate Red Ribbon Week, which serves as a tribute to Special Agent Camarena, who was kidnapped and brutally tortured and murdered by drug traffickers in Mexico.  A red lapel pin signals that you are joining the fight against drinking and drug abuse to help kids grow up safe, healthy and drug free.
