Prevention and Senior Services

Older adults use more drugs than any other age group and are at high risk for drug related problems. This unique health education program teaches older adults about the dangers of prescription and over-the-counter drug misuse in a four session series, entitled Take Charge of Your Health, presented at senior centers, retirement housing facilities, churches and other locations in Southern California.  Additional health promotion classes are also presented at eligible sites.

For service providers who work with the older adults, the program presents in-service training sessions and conferences to promote increased awareness and encourage the development of prevention and intervention strategies suitable for older clients.

The Promotores de Salud Project is accredited by CARF...The Rehabilitation Accreditation Commission.

Based on a model whereby Latino adult volunteers are trained to work in their neighborhoods as lay health promoters (“Promotores de Salud” in Spanish), the Promotores de Salud para Nuestra Tercera Edad project seeks to overcome barriers Latino seniors face in accessing health services. The trained “promotores” provide counseling and health education in disease prevention and medication management and conduct basic screenings for high blood pressure and diabetes, make referrals to culturally appropriate local health resources, and make their communities, in general, more aware of the important role of prevention and healthy lifestyles in successful aging. Our goal is to prevent and reduce risk factors and complications for the chronic diseases that plague Latino older adults, including heart disease, diabetes and hypertension.
