May 5-7, 2003, BHS/AWARE members made our first trip to Washington DC.  Members visited the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)  and the offices of Congresswoman Maxine Waters, 35th District, Congressman Dana Rohrabacher, 46th District, Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard, 34th District, Congressman Xavier Becerra, 31st District, Congresswoman Linda T. Sanchez, 39th District, Congresswoman Jane Harman, 36th District, Congresswoman Juanita Millender-McDonald, 37th District, and Congresswoman Grace Napolitano, 38th District.

Wednesday July 1, BHS/AWARE members visited Nam Le, Senior Field Representative of Assembly Member Mervyn Dymally, 52nd District.  Assembly Member Dymally, and Representative Le were both invited to attend the rally at the Board of Supervisors office on September 2, 2003, when the Board of Supervisors will proclaim September 2003 Recovery Month.  Le will assist in contacting Mayors Eric Perrodin of Compton, and Gene Daniels of Paramount, to request they proclaim September 2003 Recovery Month in their cities.

Monday July 7, BHS/AWARE members visited Mayor Edward Cortez of Pomona.  He had already received his Recovery Month Kit from Health and Human Services and did a proclamation declaring September as Recovery Month during a June 2003 council meeting.  Mayor Cortez was invited to attend the Rally at the September 2, 2003 Board of Supervisors meeting.

Rally For Recovery

Tuesday September 2, 2003, BHS/AWARE celebrated National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month with a Rally at the Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration in Downtown Los Angeles.  The Rally was sponsored by SAMHSA, Behavioral Health Services, Tarzana Treatment Centers, Cri-Help, and the California Association of Alcohol and Drug Program Executives, and was the official SAMHSA event for Los Angeles.  Guest speakers included:

  • Dr. Westley Clark, Director of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA's) Center for Substance Abuse Treatment

  • Henry Lozano, Commissioner, President's Advisory Commission on Drug-Free Communities

  • Pablo Catano, Field Deputy for Senator Edward Vincent

  • Supervisor Yvonne Burke, 2nd District

  • Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, 3rd District

  • Patrick Ogawa, Director, Alcohol and Drug Program Administration, Los Angeles County

  • Wayne Sugita, Chief Deputy Director, Alcohol and Drug Program Administration, Los Angeles County

  • Larry Gentile, President/CEO, Behavioral Health Services, and Chairman, County Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs Commission

  • Al Senella, Chief Operating Officer, Tarzana Treatment Centers, and President, California Association of Alcohol and Drug Program Executives.

The Rally was hosted by William Davis and Rodger Rhodes, Co-chairs of So Cal AWARE.  The rally was attended by over 10 Los Angeles County Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs.  Along with the guest speakers, numerous recovering and other individuals  spoke in celebration of National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month.  The event was covered by channels 2, 4, and 11.

At 1:00 pm, everyone moved inside the Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration where the Board of Supervisors proclaimed September as National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month in Los Angeles CountyDr. Jonathan Fielding, Director of Public Health and Health Officer, County Dept. of Health Services, and Dr. Thomas Garthwaite, Director and Chief Medical Officer, County Dept. of Health Services, joined the Rally's dignitaries while William Davis and Rodger Rhodes accepted the proclamation.

On Wednesday September 3, AWARE members went to Sacramento where they attended "September is Recovery Happens Month!" a rally and activities at our State Capital to celebrate and kick off Recovery Month in Sacramento.  BHS/AWARE members visited Tera Diaz, Representative for Senator Debra Bowen, District 28, Andrew M. Langley, Legislative Assistant for Assembly member Gloria Negrete McCleod, District 61, and Senator Betty Karnette.
